Language Other Than English Elective Requirementrevised 5/29/07
Students are required to complete 10 credits of either Language Other Than English (LOTE) or Visual or Performing Arts (VPA). If a student chooses to pursue Language Other Than English to meet this requirement, the 10 credits for this course must be completed in the same language study, not studies in two different languages.
In order to meet the LOTE requirement, a student must choose a course listed in the Regular Catalog or take an approved course at a community college.
The catalog courses which may be used to fulfill the LOTE requirement are as follows: French 1 or 2 German 1 or 2 Latin 1 or 2 Spanish 1 or 2
Additional languages may be available at the local community college. If the student chooses to take a language other than English course at the college, a language other than those mentioned above may be used to meet the requirement. For example, a student may take American Sign Language or Chinese at a community college and that course may be used to meet GVCS's LOTE graduation requirement.
Any additional courses completed in this area may be applied to the graduation requirements in the Special Interests/Electives area.
There are five required language goals that must be covered for a student’s course of learning to meet the graduation requirement, and as always, the student’s learning records must support that these goals have been met: • Communication: To communicate in languages other than English • Culture: To gain knowledge and understanding of their cultures • Connections: To connect with other disciplines and acquire information • Comparisons: To develop insight into own language and culture • Communities: To participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world
More specific information, including example activities and lesson plans, can be found at the CDE website at http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/pn/fd/documents/foreign-language.pdf.
