Education Specialist Job Description 2007-2008 School Year
Definition: Under the direction of the School Director, perform a broad range of functions in the delivery and support of the educational and assessment programs.
Work schedule: 175 days. Hours per day vary depending on student load.
In general, the Education Specialist (ES) is responsible for:
1. Professional Support: · Completing all paperwork and other documentation required by Golden Valley Charter School (referred to herein as GVCS) in the required time period; · Attending mandatory monthly staff meetings, as well as any other mandatory meetings that may be called for training, disseminating information, or for any other purpose as deemed necessary by the School Director; · Serving as liaison between the GVCS students and parents and the school through periodic visits, phone calls, mail, and email; · Providing support to parents and students regarding the logistics of GVCS; · Informing parents and students of the policies of GVCS; · Checking and acknowledging emails and phone calls within a 24-hr. reply time during the work week; · Disseminating schoolwide information to parents and students in a timely manner, including, but not limited to, the monthly newsletter and testing information; · Participating in student study team (SST) and individual education plan (IEP) meetings as necessary.
2. Curriculum and Learning: · Assessing each student’s educational needs, abilities, interests, motivation, learning style and demonstrated achievement to implement an appropriate personalized educational program; · Together with parent and student, designing a course of study that adheres to GVCS curriculum requirements to meet individual and school goals; · Evaluating each student’s progress towards student and school goals and objectives; · Becoming knowledgeable about high school graduation requirements; · Becoming familiar with the numerous curricular options and educational resources available, and being conversant in these approaches as needed to educate and inform GVCS students and parents; · Conducting necessary research a family may need; · Securing curriculum and other educational materials necessary for each student’s course of study in a timely manner; · Tracking the delivery and return of materials and computer equipment; · Counseling each student as needed to adjust curriculum in order to maximize student learning; · Alerting administrators to concerns about student progress.
3. Assessment: · Collecting and reviewing work samples and assembling student work portfolios; · Evaluating student work, assigning grades, and recording results; · Serving as test site coordinator and/or proctor as needed for all state- and school- required assessments, as well as administering other tests as required.
4. Performing other related duties as assigned.

To perform this job successfully, an employee must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Duties are typically performed in a home office or school office environment, in students’ homes, and public locations such as libraries. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. Employee must be able to hear and speak to exchange information, see to perform assigned duties, sit or stand for extended periods of time, possess dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment, kneel, bend at waist, and reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, to retrieve and store files, and lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The employee must have available transportation and be able to drive up to 200 miles or more in a day.
Computer Technology: To perform this job successfully, the employee must have and maintain, at all times, a functioning PC-compatible computer with a CD-Rom drive, a printer, and any software necessary to complete the ES duties. The employee should have above average knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software and email, database, and Internet experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The employee should exhibit the following: the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in a professional and courteous manner; strong organizational skills with attention for detail; the ability to work as a team player; the ability to work independently and efficiently, exercising reasonable judgment with minimal supervision.
Experience and Education: Training or experience that clearly demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities detailed above, is required. As well, familiarity with independent study charter programs, in general, and Golden Valley Charter School, in particular, is preferred.
Required Degrees, Credentials, and Licenses: Bachelor’s Degree
