Outline of High School Course Requirements

Including Graduation Requirements, Course Selection Requirements, and Enrollment Requirements

English-Language Arts Courses

Graduation Requirement:

3 years (30 credits)

 

Course Selection Requirement: 

Three yearlong English courses (30 credits) must be selected from one of the following GVCS course catalogs: the Regular Course Catalog; the Basics Course Catalog; or the a-g Course Catalog.  If approved, a course taken at a community college may be used to meet a portion of this requirement, in place of a GVCS catalog course.

 

Course Enrollment Requirement(s): 

·       All 9th and 10th grade students must be enrolled in an English course.

·       Students who do not pass the English-Language Arts portion of the California High School Exit Exam in 10th grade must also enroll in an English course in 11th grade.

 

 

Life Skills Courses

Graduation Requirement:

50 credits, comprised of:

·       Computer/Typing – 2 semesters (10 credits)  

·       Physical Education – 2 years (20 credits)

·       Health – 1 semester (5 credits)

·       Life Skills Electives – 3 semesters (15 credits)

 

Course Selection Requirement: 

The following courses must be selected from the GVCS Regular Course Catalog:

·       two semester-long courses (10 credits) in Computer/Typing,

·       two yearlong courses (20 credits) in Physical Education

·       one semester-long course (5 credits) in Health

If approved, a course taken at a community college may be used to meet a portion of these requirements, in place of a GVCS catalog course.

 

Three semesters (15 credits) of Life Skills electives may be chosen out of the GVCS Elective Catalog, or they may be created and submitted for approval.  Refer to the High School Course Selection and Approval Policy for details on submitting an elective course for approval.  If approved, a course taken at a community college may be used to meet a portion of these requirements, in place of a GVCS high school course.

 

Course Enrollment Requirement(s): 

There are no course enrollment requirements for Life Skills.

 

 

History-Social Science Courses

Graduation Requirement:

30 credits, comprised of:

·       World History – 1 year (10 credits)   

·       United States History – 1 year (10 credits)

·       Economics – 1 semester (5 credits)

·       American Government – 1 semester (5 credits)

 

Course Selection Requirement: 

The following courses must be selected from one of the following GVCS course catalogs: the Regular Course Catalog; the Basics Course Catalog; or the a-g Course Catalog:

·       one yearlong course (10 credits) in World History

·       one yearlong course (10 credits) in US History

·       one semester-long course (5 credits) in Economics

·       one semester-long course (5 credits) in American Government

If approved, a course taken at a community college may be used to meet a portion of these requirements, in place of a GVCS catalog course.

 

Course Enrollment Requirement(s): 

·       Students must be enrolled in World History in either 9th or 10th grade.

·       Students must be enrolled in United States History in 11th grade.

 

 

Mathematics Courses

Graduation Requirement:

2 years (20 credits)

Additionally, students must successfully complete Algebra 1, in high school or prior to entering high school.  Algebra 1 completed prior to 9th grade does not count towards the 20-credit math requirement.

 

Course Selection Requirement: 

Two yearlong Mathematics courses (20 credits) must be selected from one of the following GVCS course catalogs: the Regular Course Catalog; the Basics Course Catalog; or the a-g Course Catalog.  If approved, a course taken at a community college may be used to meet a portion of this requirement, in place of a GVCS catalog course.

 

Course Enrollment Requirement(s): 

·       Any high school student who has not completed Algebra 1 must be enrolled in a math course that will lead to the successful completion of Algebra 1.

·       All 9th and 10th grade students must be enrolled in a math course.

 

 

Science Courses

Graduation Requirement:

2 years (20 credits)

·       1 year (10 credits) must be a physical science (e.g. Chemistry, Physics, etc.)

·       1 year (10 credits) must be a life science (e.g. Biology)

 

Course Selection Requirement: 

One yearlong physical science course (10 credits) and one yearlong life science course (10 credits) must be selected from the GVCS Regular Course Catalog or the Basics Course Catalog.  If approved, a course taken at a community college may be used to meet a portion of these requirements, in place of a GVCS catalog course.

 

Course Enrollment Requirement(s):  

·       All students must take a life science in 10th grade.

 

 

Special Interests Courses

Graduation Requirement:

12 semesters (60 credits)

·       1 year (10 credits) must be a Language other than English or a Visual or Performing Art

 

Course Selection Requirement: 

If a student chooses to complete a language other than English course to meet the 10-credit requirement:

One yearlong course (10 credits) in a language other than English must be selected from the GVCS Regular Course Catalog.  If approved, a course taken at a community college may be used to meet this requirement, in place of a GVCS catalog course.

 

If a student chooses to complete  a visual or performing arts course to meet the 10-credit requirement:

One yearlong course (10 credits) in a visual or performing arts must be selected from the GVCS Regular Course Catalog or the GVCS a-g Course Catalog.  If approved, a course taken at a community college may be used to meet this requirement, in place of a GVCS catalog course.

 

Ten semesters (50 credits) of Special Interests electives may be chosen out of any one of the 4 GVCS catalogs, including the Elective Course Catalog, the Regular Course Catalog, the Basics Course Catalog, or the a-g Course Catalog, or elective courses may be created and submitted for approval.  Refer to the High School Course Selection and Approval Policy for details on submitting an elective course for approval.  If a course that appears in the Regular, Basics, or a-g Course Catalogs is to be used as an elective, the catalog course must be selected and followed.  If approved, a course taken at a community college may be used to meet a portion of this requirement, in place of a GVCS catalog course.

 

Course Enrollment Requirement(s): 

·       Students who do not pass the English-Language Arts portion of the California High School Exit Exam after one attempt must enroll in CAHSEE Review Course: English Language Arts the semester immediately following their most recent attempt.

·       Students who do not pass the Mathematics portion of the California High School Exit Exam after one attempt must enroll in CAHSEE Review Course: Mathematics the semester immediately following their most recent attempt.
