Planning High School Courses revised 8/10/07
A GVCS high school student’s course of study must be carefully planned, both in the short term, on a semesterly basis, and over the long term, to insure the student meets all necessary GVCS policies and graduation requirements, in addition to being well prepared for his or her chosen post-high school endeavors.
The student’s post-high school plans are an extremely important consideration when planning courses. College or university bound students will want to check with any potential institutions to find out about their specific requirements for admission. Students interested in attending UC and/or CSU campus will want to take the a-g courses, and follow the UC’s recommended pattern of study.
Within the GVCS course catalogs, you will find a selection of a-g, regular, and basics level courses, for the required course titles. Within his or her course load, a student may mix a-g, regular, and basics level courses. Community college courses are also an option for GVCS students. Elective courses may be chosen from the GVCS Electives catalog, or they may be created. Consult with your ES for details. At the beginning of each semester, a specific plan will be made for that particular semester’s course of study. Students, parents, and ESs will work together to choose the appropriate courses for the student. Expectations are made clear from the beginning of the semester, and a Course Selections form is completed and signed by the student, the parent, and the ES. The ES will submit each student’s course selections to the Educational Support Manager for final approval. This step is crucial for making sure the student’s classes will appear on his or her transcript.
