Kindergarten/Transitional Kindergarten Policy

A child shall be admitted to kindergarten at the beginning of a school year, or at any later time in the same school year, if the child will have his or her fifth birthday on or before September 1. The GVCS governing board will not grant parent requests to waive the kindergarten entrance cut-off date.

A child shall be admitted to transitional kindergarten at the beginning of a school year, or at a later time in the same year if the child will have his or her fifth birthday between September 2 and February 2.

A child who has his or her fifth birthday after February 2, but on or before the last day of enrollment for the school year, shall be admitted to transitional kindergarten once he or she reaches his or her fifth birthday.

For first grade enrollment, California law requires a child to be six years old on or before September 1 to be legally eligible for first grade (EC Section 48010). The school, with parental input, may determine whether the six-year-old student will be enrolled in kindergarten or first grade.

GVCS will not grant acceleration into first grade at any time during the current school year in which a student is enrolled in transitional kindergarten or kindergarten if the child has his or her sixth birthday during that school year. The student will remain in the current grade level for the entirety of the school year and be promoted the following year into first grade.
